How to prepare your kids for a photo shoot

For me as a Philadelphia family Photographer, I’m never bothered by kids’ behavior…from those that run wild, and those that are simply camera shy .  It’s all about capturing personalities, and who they are at the current time.  Being a parent during a photo shoot is stressful!   I understand completely.  You’ve booked the photographer, picked everyone’s outfits, dragged your husband there.  You want the experience to be fun and the pictures to turn out amazing.

Here are some helpful tips to make that happen:

  • Make sure kids are comfortable in what they’re wearing.  If your child hates what they’re wearing, it’s going to show in the photos.  If that means skipping that adorable headband, or collared button up dress shirt, …it’s ok.  Happy kids make for better photos.  Dress with the weather in mind.  Make sure your child(ren) isn’t feeling too cold or hot.
  • Have everyone fed and bring extra snacks.  It’s hard to calm down hungry kids!   Be sure they’ve had plenty to eat before arriving, and bring snacks.  Bring snacks that are small and not messy.
  • Drinks: Avoid colorful drinks or lollypops before your shoot.  Do bring water or juice to rehydrate.
  • Naps:  If your child is still of napping age, make sure they nap before the shoot.
  • Talk to your kids about the photo shoot.  Talk to your kids about what we’ll be doing, and how much fun it’s going to be!
  • Let your child smile naturally!  Ok parents…Resist the urge to say things like “Say Cheese”.  The best way to get a ‘real smile’ is to make your child laugh or smile.  Let’s tell funny stories, act silly, and eliciting genuine emotions.
  • Rewards.  Giving your child(ren) a treat after the photo shoot is an excellent way to reward him/her for following direction and being cooperative.  How about some candy or a trip to get some ice cream afterwards…anything that gives your child(ren) something to look forward to.
  • Have fun!  Your kids will pick up on your mood, so relax and enjoy the experience.   I’m capturing your family just as you are at this point in time.
